A Parent's Guide to Buying a Safe Vehicle for a Teen

Last updated 11 months ago

When it comes to cars, teens and their parents tend to prioritize things differently. Teens want a cool car that is loaded with accessories and roomy enough to seat their friends. Parents just want to find a car that is safe. Unfortunately for teens, parents pay the bills and make the rules. Once your teen completes driver’s education and gets a license, the time will come to pick a car. With safety in mind, here is a guide to buying your teen a vehicle.

  • New Cars Are Usually Safer

If you can afford to buy a new car for your teen, it’s probably a good idea. Teens are far more likely to wind up in serious accidents due to their inexperience as drivers. Because of this, it’s important that they drive a car with the latest safety features, such as side airbags and stability control. Newer models almost always emphasize safety. Finding a pre-owned model that’s only a couple of years old may be a great option.

  • Big Cars Are Usually Safer

While your teen may be an exceptionally good driver, he or she will still have to share the road with other drivers. It is important that your son or daughter drives a car that will increase his or her chances of walking away from an accident unharmed. Smaller cars are generally not as safe as bigger cars.

  • Fast Cars Are Usually More Dangerous

Teens are risk-takers by nature, so don’t provide the type of car that encourages risky driving, such as a small sports car. This isn’t to say you should find the slowest vehicle there is, because that’s also potentially unsafe. Simply look for a car that doesn’t tempt your teen to hit the gas too hard.

In the end, how teens drive is as important as what they drive. By signing your teenager up for driver’s education at Greg’s Driving School in Maryland, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that he or she will be taught the right way to drive. Call us today at (301) 703-9868 for more information.
